E30 Project: The Build

Mark Ritter, owner of a gorgeous Guards Red 1997 Porsche S, maintained by German Car Repair, wanted a second fun car to tool around with and participate in the occasional Driver’s Education event. The search began for a BMW 325iS project car. Mark found a white 1987 5-speed with potential, and drove it home from out of state. We discussed various engine options, including a naturally aspirated stroker engine, but after some prodding from us, Mark finally decided forced induction was the way to go. A 2.7 liter donor block and a 524 turbo diesel crankshaft (forged) were located, as were 8.5:1 Mahle pistons. The rods were sized and shot-peened, and the crankshaft and flywheel balanced as an assembly. We freshened up the 2.5 liter head, and using a multiple layer steel head gasket, assembled the long block in preparation for the TCD turbocharger kit. Ground Control Suspension, a 5-lug E36 M3 hub conversion, a UUC big brake kit, and 17” throwing star wheels were installed at German Car Repair. Many interior upgrades, extra instrumentation, additional oil cooling, and cooling system upgrades were installed as well.

Dyno runs showed the car producing in excess of 300 RWHP and over 300 lb-ft of torque. It certainly felt strong to us!

Mark sold his BMW to a buyer in New Jersey, where, we're sorry to report, the car fell victim to Hurricane Sandy. It was declared a total loss.

RIP little Bimmer.
